FIPROPHOS 545 is a liquid phosphate-based formulation used for phosphating iron and steel surfaces before painting. The resulting coating consists of iron oxides and phosphates.
Use and Applications
The product is applied by spray, even at low temperatures. The surfactants and wetting agents contained in the product are specifically used to prevent foam formation at low temperatures.
Depending on the workpieces and their surface contamination (grease, oils, oxides...) and based on the plant conditions, various cycle solutions are possible.
Before treatment with FIPROPHOS 545, it is advisable to perform degreasing, followed by a thorough rinse with mains water. As an alternative to the initial alkaline degreasing, FIPROPHOS 545 itself can be used, optionally combined with a suitable degreasing additive.
If a preliminary degreasing phase is not planned, add the necessary amount of degreasing additive to the phosphating solution as suggested by the Fiprokim Technical Service.
After treatment with FIPROPHOS 545, the material must be rinsed with pressurized water (1 - 2 bar) with continuous partial renewal, for 1' - 3' at room temperature, and subsequently with demineralized water or, preferably, with suitable products recommended by the Fiprokim Technical Service, at 30 - 50°C.

BATH PREPARATION
For every 1000 liters of solution, add from 20 to 50 kg of FIPROPHOS 545, which should be added with the pumps running into the tank filled with water and already brought to the working temperature. Circulate the solution for at least 10 minutes before introducing the first material to be treated. It is recommended to adjust the working pH within the preset range to avoid oxidation due to an overly acidic pH. The usual working pH is between 4.75 and 5.1.

Bath control
By monitoring the pH, the bath concentration is controlled by determining the total acidity points, as follows: take 10 ml of the bath using a calibrated pipette, place in a flask, dilute with approximately 50 ml of distilled water, add 5-6 drops of phenolphthalein alcoholic solution, and titrate with 0.1 N caustic soda until a persistent pink color is achieved. The number of ml of 0.1 N caustic soda used represents the bath points which, for a preparation at 20 g/l, is approximately 7.2. The reported total acidity is valid for a new bath without correction of pH.
Therefore, after adjusting the pH, it is advisable to determine the total acidity, which then serves as a reference parameter for the concentration.
Power supply
It is fed based on the pH.
The bath must be checked periodically and maintained at the concentration established during start-up: for each missing point of total acidity and for every 1000 l of bath, add 2.8 kg of FIPROPHOS 545.
Storage
All parts of the system in contact with the FIPROPHOS 545 solution can be constructed of standard carbon steel. Avoid galvanized steel, die-cast aluminum, brass, copper.
